The schools identified, in cleared areas are Mulliyawalia RCTM & Silawatte GTMS. Plans are under way to repair and paint the Happiness Centre spaces in time. The schools with be equipped with and arts & crafts space, musical items for the school band activities, a full library of books, educational charts and games, sports good for the varying ages with the aim of starting sports meets and regular sports activities in the schools.
ACT firmly believes in an all round schooling experience and wish that each of these students enjoy learning in these Happiness Centres.
You can donate NOW towards these centres – we aim to have 4 centres up by the first quarter of 2012 and plan for another 6 before the end of 2012 in Mullaitivu. ACT was able to help 27 schools within the Ponneryn area in 2011 thanks to donations received.

Pecha Kucha selected ACT as the beneficiary from the events proceeds. We were able to part fund the Boy Scouts launch in Pooneryn thanks to the proceeds from the first event held in Colombo. The audience of Pecha Kucha Colombo also painted wonderful canvasses for ACT which we will auction at the end of the calendar of events. Thank you to everyone that participated.

With a lapse of many years during the war, we launched the first scout group of 50 boys in the Kilinochci district. It was a proud day for the 50 students who signed up for this programme. They demonstrated good character, good grades & keen interest to be selected into this programme. The programme will be headed by a veteran Scout from Kilinochchi who schooled at Poonakary Maha Vidyalayam and was part of the scouts movement back in 1986.

The kids were so excited to wear their new uniforms and receive scout packs. We firmly believe in widening their opportunities and learning experience. The scouting movement will improve their all round exposure and strive to make them exemplary students. We hope to introduce a similar programme to the Kilinochchi Maha Vidyalaya and are currently in discussion with the education authorities.

Fund raising is on going for this project. We plan to launch more boy Scouts movements around the province. We will work with the local authorities and the larger schools to implement this programme. Please contact us if interested in supporting this project.

We are making all purchases directly from the Boy Scouts head office. the cost per child works out to approx Rs.4,500/- for all materials, log books, uniforms, tools, etc.

There’s potential for a minimum of 5 Happiness centres per area.

Having worked in these areas we feel we can significantly improve each childs’ learning experience and all round exposure through a wider range of reading, team sports, music and the arts. We have identified essential items for these centres and hope we can call on donations against either the items or donations against each centre. Sponsoring a centre can also be arranged by an individual or organisation.

We have initially selected Poonakery Maha Vidyalaya to pilot this programme. They have signed up 50 students for this programme which we hope to launch in the new school term end August 2011.
Cost of uniform and items needed per child amounts to Rs.2,500/- per child.
All items will be purchased directly from the Sounts head office and handed to the students.

It will not cost a lot to help these schools and ACT together with the Sri Lanka Army Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment plan to help rebuild & restore these school buildings. We have sourced the source roofing sheets from Kilinochchi and plan to install additional black boards so teachers can conduct multiple classes within the same space. We will work together with the Sri Lanka Army on this project to give us manual labour support.

The cost per school for roofing sheets and GI poles and other items required for the structural support is approx Rs.100,000/- per school. We have identified 10 schools that need immediate help before the monsoon start end October. Any donation towards this project will be appreciated.

During our first visit to the area in February we were able to meet with each of the principals to discuss and identify their immediate needs. All items were negotiated at discounted/bulk rates with as many items as possible being sourced directly from the Jaffna through local distributors.  Schools were of mixed ages 8 pre-schools, 5 up to A/Ls and 4 up to O/L. We aim to identify specific needs for each school and donate items so that the children can enjoy better quality reading materials, competitive sports and learn musical instruments.  ACT thanks you all for your continuous support.
